Skye
Clearwater's father, General Cadyn Clearwater, refuses to allow her
to fight alongside him and her brother, Rylie. Skye cannot
understand why since she received the same training as Rylie
including training in Shizu, an ancient Cerulean warrior discipline.
But her father is adamant. He is half-Cerulean, clairvoyant to a
point and can communicate telepathically. He can also create an
illusion of invisibility. Skye does not share his powers but she is
an empath.
When
her father and brother do not return after a long while, Skye goes
to look for them with only her humadroid, Adam5. It is he who
suggests she go into cryosleep to conserve rations. She wakens to
find herself surrounded by Hegemonian soldiers, a unit of eleven
men. Sky also finds that Adam5 has a fist-size hole in his chest.
They think she is a helpless female until she proves them wrong by
killing one when he dares to touch her. Fortunately for her, their
Commander decides the soldier deserved what he got. It is then he
tells her that her ship went off course after Adam5 malfunctioned.
Commander Aramon Degas only gets her first name. If she tells him
who she truly is, things will not go well. And that barely covers
the beginning of this space adventure.
Regent
Morana badly wants Aramon and he wants nothing to do with her. So
she decides to take up residence on his ship and orders Aramon to
train Skye as a gratifier. Skye will then be given to Soclias, who
rules the Vithgoths, vampire-like creatures of the planet Sartan.
Aramon
has been attracted to Skye since he first saw her but he did not
wish to make love to her because of the whims of a cruel woman. But
they find that love can come along in times of crisis and be sweet,
lovely, and unexpectedly passionate.
With
the help of Aramon's friend, Zann, Skye manages to evade the lustful
advances of the other crewmen. But how will Aramon protect her when
they reach Sartan? And what of Skye's father and brother?
CERULEAN SKYE is a good science-fiction love story. There is a
strong, brooding hero and a coming-into-her-own heroine. Morana is
boo-hissable and Soclias made my skin crawl. It may be a bit clichéd
and predictable, but it makes for a nice afternoon's entertainment.
